The Good Thief

I just finished reading a chapter about the "good thief" from the book, No Greater Love.

The good thief was a revolutionary, someone revolting against Rome, which would explain his condemnation. He was also one of the people mocking Jesus on Good Friday.

But later we find out that the good thief had a change of heart as he hung next to Jesus on the cross.

"Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Luke 23:42

Did you know that the good thief is the only person in the Gospels to address Jesus simply by name?

Jesus is referred to as Son of David, Son of the Most High God, Jesus-Master or sometimes Jesus of Nazareth, but never just "Jesus".

The good thief's heart has truly changed!

"Having rebuked those voices at the Cross (step one) and admitted his sin (step two), the good thief finds a new confidence. He turns to Christ and addresses him personally, intimately, as a friend - "Jesus" - and he humbly places all his trust in Christ's mercy (step three)."

The converted thief asks Jesus to remember him. Yet, Jesus gives him more than what he simply asks!

He forgives him!

"Today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:43

He does not just want to pardon our offenses, like a judge. He wants our hearts, like a lover. He longs for us to be intimately close to him. What he offered the good thief, he offers to us today and everyday if we turn to him - divine intimacy! For he said "You will be with me." No Greater Love

"Life is to be with Christ; for where Christ is, there is the kingdom." St. Ambrose

Week of Reconciliation

"At one time this was called not Holy Week but the Week of Reconciliation. The reason Christ came into this world was to pick up the pieces of our broken lives. But the emphasis should not be placed on the suffering and death of our divine Lord to the exclusion of what it points toward - his Resurrection and ours. This is indeed a week of reconciliation. If we have not been able to practice our faith as we would like and as we know we should, this is a wonderful week to get started all over again." John Cardinal O'Connor

Our world is so broken!

Our society, our government, our families and our relationships are all broken.

Each of us broken!

But God saw our brokenness and He sent His only Son to pick up the broken pieces.

By Christ's suffering, death and resurrection we are redeemed!

Yet, we are all still human and fall into temptation of sin.

That is why Jesus gave us the Sacrament of Reconciliation!

To heal us and to save us from our sin so we can rise with Him!

It's easy to find fault in other people but difficult to recognize our own sin.

This Holy Week is a week of Reconciliation.

A week to examine what I have done and what I have failed to do.

Give Him the chance to help pick up your broken pieces.

"He will provide the way and the means, such as you could never have imagine. Leave it to Him, let go of yourself, lose yourself on the Cross and you will find yourself entirely." St. Teresa of Avila

Palm Sunday

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week.

Jesus enters Jerusalem and is treated like a King.

Yet, everything is about to change.

 Jesus, however, remains the same.

He also remains silent.

Today I needed this Best Lent Ever Reflection.

"Sometimes silence is the best response to a situation and sometimes by being silent we are able to send a powerful message."  Matthew Kelly

I needed this reminder.

Jesus was silent though he wasn't guilty.

Jesus was silent though he is the truth.

His silence would transform the world.

His silence would change our hearts.

My Lord Jesus Christ, you have made this journey to die for me with unspeakable love, and I have many times ungratefully abandoned you. But now I love you with all my heart, and, because I love you, I am sincerely sorry for ever having offended you. Pardon me, my God, and permit me to accompany you on this journey. You go to die for love me. I want, my beloved, Redeemer, to die for love of you. My Jesus, I will live and die always united to you. Amen. St. Alphonsus Liguori

100% Available

"I do not know you, God, because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside." Flannery O'Connor

Am I available to God or am I in the way?

What distracts me from being available to God?

I am distracted when I choose to make room for the things on my to-do list instead of making room to be available with God.

If my day is packed with things to do, then I am making the choice to not be available.

If I am off to a late start or have too much to do or am too tired at the end of the day, I am making a choice of whether or not to be available.

We need to make room for God.

"Either we learn to find our Lord in ordinary, everyday life, or else we shall never find him." St. Josemaria Escriva

How available are you to God at this time in your life?

When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me. Jeremiah 29:13

"God, make me 100% available to you today!" Best Lent Ever

Yes

Today is the Solemnity of the Annunciation!

The Angel Gabriel said unto Mary that she would be the Mother of God!

Mary's response to this greeting is summarized in one word,  "YES!"

"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Luke 1:38

How beautiful is her fiat!

How beautiful is her "yes"!

Not my will be done but your will be done, Lord.

Help me to give my "yes" on a daily basis.

Not just a "yes" to do more, but to be more according to your holy will.

"For nothing will be impossible for God." Luke 1:37

"The Lord said, as he entered the world:/Behold, I come to do your will, O God." Hebrews 10:5.7

Here is my "yes."

Be Patient

Today the world just seems a little off.

Or maybe it's just me?

I lost my wallet in the store but thankfully, someone turned it in!

How that happened, I am still not sure.

Anyway, I did get my wallet back and nothing appears to be stolen.

Thanks, God!

I wish I could have prevented myself from that situation.

I wish I would have taken my purse with me instead of just my wallet.

It would have saved time and there would be no reason to panic.

However, like I said, thanks be to God someone was honest and turned it in!

A big sigh of relief!

A lesson learned!

"Be patient with everyone but above all be patient with yourself. Do not be disheartened by your imperfections but always rise up with fresh courage." St. Francis de Sales

Look Up

At the end of the book, 33 Days to Greater Glory, Fr. Michael E. Gaitley uses two simple words to help us on a daily basis.

"Look up."

Though terrified of needles, Fr. Michael shared his experience of having blood drawn. In that moment, Fr. Michael decided to "look up."

Meaning in that moment he turned not only his gaze but his heart and looked up to heaven.

Looking up is a prayer all by itself.

It's an offering.

"My offering up and asking the Father in such cases is usually not done with words and that's okay."

The Father knows our hearts!

"I often seek the Father amid the various circumstances of my day."

When discouraged, look up.

When suffering, look up.

When faced with tragedy, look up.

When grateful, look up.

Just because, look up.

He wants us to turn to Him and to look up.

Look up and listen for His soft and gentle voice.

"You are my beloved."

Look up, child!

Pro-life and Pro-love

Better late than never, the Diocese of Boise, "I shall give half" campaign should inspire us to support pro-life organizations.

If you are wondering where and to whom your "half" should be given to, check out the Sisters of Life!

The Sisters of Life are a beautiful group of women who have given their lives to help protect the sanctity of human life.

If you want to make a difference for the unborn, the Sisters of Life are a step in that direction!

The Sisters mother the mothers, so that the mothers can mother their children.

They walk with pregnant women, vulnerable to abortion and women who have suffered from abortion.

The Sisters of Life are not only pro-life, they are pro-love!

"God sees the broken as the best and He sees the best in the broken and He calls the wounded to be the world changers." Ann Voskamp

Bigger and Better

There is something bigger and more important than ourselves.

Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. John 12:24

The Gospel this weekend should inspire us to be that grain of wheat.

If we want to experience life to the full, than we have to first learn how to die unto self.

"If we are not hungry for Christ, we're probably too full of ourselves." unknown

We need to turn our hearts toward Jesus.

May our eyes be fixed on the Lord and not on ourselves.

"I will draw everyone to myself." He said this indicating the kind of death he would die.

Let us pick up our crosses and draw close to Him.

Something bigger and more important awaits!

St. Joseph

Today is the Solemnity of St. Joseph during the year of St. Joseph!

It is also my sweet sister Nicole Josefa's Golden Birthday and feast day!

St. Joseph, you were a quiet and trusting man, please teach us to place our faith in God.

St. Joseph, you had a humble heart, help us to build up humility in our hearts.

St. Joseph, you loved the Virgin Mother and your foster child Jesus, be a loving father to us as well.

St. Joseph, protector of the Holy Family, protect each of us and guide us to your Son.

St. Joseph, man of courage and deep faith, thank you for your example of marriage and fatherhood.

Good St. Joseph, bless and encourage all husbands and fathers.

Bless those who have the desire to be fathers and husbands.

I ask for blessings on all the Josephs in the world. I ask for blessings on all of my blog viewers.

I ask for blessings for my sister, dad and brother on this special feast day!

St. Joseph, who's protection is so great and so strong, pray for us!

Memorare to St. Joseph

Remember, O most chaste spouse of the Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any who implored your help and sought your intercession were left unassisted. Full of confidence in your power, I fly unto you, and beg your protection, despise not, O foster-father of the Redeemer, my humble supplication but in your bounty hear and answer me. Amen.

Be With Me

My sister Maddie shared with our family the St. Patrick's Breastplate Prayer.

Yesterday, I shared the St. Patrick "Christ be with me" prayer.

That prayer is part of the St. Patrick's Breastplate Prayer.

It is a beautiful prayer and I encourage you to read all of it.

I wanted to share the first stanza and last stanza with you today.

St. Patrick Breastplate Prayer

I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same.
The Three in One, and One in Three,
Of Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

This is a powerful prayer!

"I bind unto myself today." St. Patrick

To whom and to what do I bind myself to?

This is a choice we make everyday.

Christ be with me,

In the Name of the Trinity,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

Amen.

St. Patrick

 "Christ with me,

Christ before me,

Christ behind me,

Christ in me,

Christ beneath me,

Christ above me,

Christ on my right,

Christ on my left,

Christ when I lie down,

Christ when I sit down,

Christ when I arise,

Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,

Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,

Christ in every eye that sees me,

Christ in every ear that hears me."

St. Patrick

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

This morning I celebrated St. Patrick's Feast Day with my goddaughter!

Together we watched a movie about St. Patrick's life.

One man, through faith in the one true God, converted Ireland.

He drove out snakes from the land, and that is still true to this day!

There are no snakes in Ireland! (We even asked Siri!)

The three leaf clover was used by St. Patrick to help explain the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Three persons, but one God.

St. Patrick's faith inspires me to grow deeper into my faith.

St. Patrick's awareness and obedience to do the Father's will, is a reminder for us to trust that God will take us where He wants us to be.

We have only to keep still.

"Be still and know that I am God. Be still and know that I am. Be still and know. Be still. Be." St. Patrick

St. Patrick, pray for us!

3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. John 3:16

I could not pass up the opportunity to share John 3:16 on 3/16.

We hear this scripture verse a lot but do we really listen to what God is saying?

"Children stop their ears to keep from hearing bad news: an angry parent, an unwelcome order, an unpleasant prohibition. As adults we sometimes stop the ears of our heart to keep from hearing God's voice, lest there too, we hear bad news, only to discover that we have shut out the good news of his incredible love for us."  Magnificat Reflection

Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Jeremiah 7:23

His incredible love for all of us is revealed each and every day!

We have only to stop and listen to His voice.

Open the ears of our hearts, Lord!

Help us to believe in Your word and to know of Your love.

"Nails were not enough to hold God-and-man nailed fastened to the Cross, had not love held Him there."

St. Catherine of Siena

The Truth

"You can have your truth and I can have my truth, but there is no the truth to which we are  all accountable. Like Pilate, many in our culture embrace moral relativism mistakenly thinking it covers up a multitude of sins. If there is no right or wrong, I can continue doing whatever I want and not feel badly about it. The problem is that if there is no truth, then anything goes. Anything can be rationalized and justified." No Greater Love

Relativism is the sad truth about our culture today.

You do you and I'll do me.

But what good comes of that?

"If we say there is no truth, then we cannot say that the killing of an untold number of babies, whether in child sacrifice in primitive cultures or in abortion in our own, is wrong-- because each culture is free to make its own truth and its own morality." No Greater Love

There has to be a right and a wrong.

A truth must be spoken.

Abortion is not only wrong, it is harmful to both the baby and the mother.

Today I held in my arms my cousin's one month old baby girl.

Her little fingers and feet melted my heart as she slept on my lap.

Life is so beautiful and every unborn baby has the right to live.

That is the truth.

"If all the marches, all the prayers, all the vigils, the lectures, articles, debates and encyclicals saved but one tiny, fragile life, would not the Lord of Life say to us, "Well done, good and faithful servant. For you not only fed me and clothed, encouraged and consoled, visited me in prison and welcomed me a stranger. You saved my life." Cardinal O'Connor

Jesus, You are the Truth, the Way and the Life.

Walk in the Light

The light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. John 3:19-21

This is the Gospel message for the weekend and  for every day life.

Jesus is the Light!

We can either run to the light or run away from the light.

The choice is ours.

I prefer light.

"Start being brave about everything. Drive out darkness and spread light. Don't look at your weaknesses. Realize instead that in Christ crucified you can do everything." St. Catherine of Siena

We are called to be light in the darkness!

We are invited to share His light with the world!

Time to start spreading the Truth and His light!

"See darkness covers the earth,/ and thick clouds cover the peoples;/ But upon you the Lord shines,/ and over you appears his glory./ Nations shall walk by your light,/ and kings by your shining radiance. The Lord shall be your light no darkness can extinguish!" Isaiah 60:2-3, 19c

Faithful and Steadfast

"Mary can help us to overcome the temptation to anxiety and to live our lives with trust and eagerness before the eternal one -- to rediscover life itself as a vocation, which is to be lived with the faith in God and faithfulness that God's own faithfulness makes possible." Cardinal Carlo Martini

Most of our lives are spent wondering who, what and where we are meant to be.

So much thought is put into knowing the answers that we often forget to live in the present moment.

God has the answers to our questions.

"Life itself is a vocation."

We need this reminder every day.

He has a plan; you and I have a purpose!

"Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies." St. Mother Teresa

Part of our vocation is saying 'yes' to His plan.

God is faithful and steadfast.

Create in my a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

The Basics

We all desire to become more,  but not knowing where to begin, keeps us from trying.

We want what is easy. We want what is simple. We want the basics.

And turns out, we need the basics.

The Basics of Prayer.

Matthew Kelly shares in his Best Lent Ever video five ways to base our daily lives:

Basics

1. What is the first basic instruction? Praying for 10 minutes a day.

2. When do I pray for ten minutes a day? Preferably in the morning, to begin the day with God.

3. Where do I find time to spend in prayer? In a quiet place. Jesus often left to pray by himself in the quiet. Find a quiet spot in your home or at your church and sit with Jesus in the silence.

4. How to pray? The Prayer Process is a great guide to begin praying.

5. Why?  The answer is different for everyone.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately." Henry David Thoreau

I think we all wish to live deliberately.

Let's go back to the basics and live and pray intentionally!

See link below for Prayer Process:

Gratitude

Today was my first day back, in over a year, volunteering at Prairie Mountain Nutrition!

It felt so good to be reunited!

I have missed the beautiful people I work with and serve!

Today was also my first day at seniors' without my Grandma Barb.

Seniors' was our special time together.

For the past four years, we would take Grandma home after lunch every Tuesday.

I missed seeing her smile today but I know she was smiling from up above.

So many memories I am grateful for!

I am counting all of my blessings!

The reunion today was beautiful and meaningful!

I am so blessed to live in this wonderful community!

I am so blessed to be among such beautiful people!

I am so blessed to be given this gift, the gift of gratitude!

There is so much to be grateful for!

My heart is filled with gratitude!

"Jesus does not demand great action from us but simply surrender and gratitude." St. Therese

Prayer of Generosity

Lord, teach me to be generous, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not count the cost, to fight and not heed the wounds, to toil and not seek for rest, to labor and not look for any reward, save that of knowing I do your holy will. St. Ignatius of Loyola

Shine Bright

"Jesus, help me to be a shooting star, a bright light, that leads other people to You." - unknown

Without darkness there would be no stars.

Without darkness there would be no light.

We are called to be light in the darkness!

Sunshine on a cloudy day!

A smile to a stranger!

Hope for the hopeless!

We are drawn to the light and the light is within us!

Let your little light shine!

"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up." Thessalonians 5:11

Dear God,

I know that You are my Father in heaven. Thank you for always loving me as Your special child.

Jesus, You made me good, sacred, and beautiful like You. And you gave me a heart like Yours. Help me to make good choices that come from Your truth and the love in my heart.

Jesus, help me to see other people through Your eyes, and to love them like You do. And help me to see and encourage them in their goodness.

Then I will be that shooting star, that bright light, that will lead other people to You. And they will know that they are good, sacred, and beautiful too.

I love you, Jesus. Amen.

Courage Dear Heart

What are you angry about today? Is it a holy anger or a non holy anger? That's the question Matthew Kelly puts before us today.

Is your anger justified or not?

In tomorrow's Gospel, Jesus turns the table!

Literally, turns the tables over in the temple because he is angry that the temple is not being used as a house of worship.

His anger is just.

There is a lot in the world to be angry about, but not all of our anger is holy.

When we experience those moments of non holy anger, pray.

Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change... Courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

Courage is found simply by praying that prayer.

"To have courage for whatever comes in life - everything lies in that." St. Teresa of Avila

Peace Be With You

"Peace be with you. Those words, coming from the lips of the Risen Savior, cause peace. They act with the same power as the words that Jesus had spoken in the garden: "I AM." However, instead of causing a whole cohort of Roman soldiers to fall to the ground, they cause fear, shame, and sin to disappear just as the dawn dispels the darkness over the night." 33 Days to Greater Glory

Whatever is troubling you, peace be with you.

Whatever is creating anxiety within you, peace be with you.

Whatever fears you have or shame you carry, peace be with you.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do let them be afraid. John 14:27

Be not afraid and take heart in His peace!

Give your troubled hearts to Jesus.

"Those who sincerely say 'Jesus, I trust in You' will find comfort in all of their anxieties and fears." Pope John Paul II

Peace be with you, as we pray, Jesus, I trust in You.

Charity

"Tolerance is not a Christian virtue. Charity, Justice, Mercy, Prudence, Honesty; these are Christian virtues." Archbishop Charles Chaput

Time to start practicing these virtues!

We are called to be like Christ and He obtained all of these virtues.

St. Therese of Liseux would say, "I choose all."

However, there is also beauty in slowly working on these virtues one by one.

I thought I would begin with charity.

There is a lack of charity and the only way to fix that is to be charitable.

The virtue helps us to love God and our neighbor.

It is not always going to be easy to be charitable.

Sometimes it will feel like there is only so much we can tolerate...

Yet, charity means to love even when it's hard.

Who needs charity in your life?

Often it's the people in your own home or the person next to you.

Love them.

Act of Charity

O my God, I love you above all things with my whole heart and soul because You are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love  of You. I forgive all who have injured me and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen.

Wisdom and Prayer

If you could ask God for anything, knowing that He would give you whatever you ask Him for, what would you ask Him for?

I would ask God for peace.

When I am overwhelmed or I feel stretched by life, I pray for peace.

Peace is found through wisdom and prayer.

We need wisdom to pray before making decisions.

We need wisdom and prayer to obtain peace in our hearts.

"We are here to do what we can; God is here to do what we can't." Fr. Mike Schmitz

Through God all things are possible and through God there is peace.

"May the peace of God which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." St. Paul

Called you by name

"The sight of such a devout disciple moves Jesus to tenderly call her by name, "Mary." Hearing her name, this woman who's so filled of love,  responds to love. Being a meek, little lamb, she knows the voice of her shepherd, the Good Shepherd, the one who gave his life for his sheep." 33 Days to Greater Glory

He calls her by name.

Our names are so significant.

Our names give us identity and meaning.

When Mary Magdalene hears her name, her response is love.

She is responding to Love, Himself.

Jesus.

"The name "Jesus" means "God saves". The name expresses his identity and his mission "because he will save his people from their sin" (Matthew 1:21). Catechism 430

God saved Mary Magdalene and He saved you and me.

He calls each of us by name!

We have to listen so we can respond with love.

He knows our hearts!

We are His forever!

Below is one of my favorite scenes from the Series, The Chosen. Please take a moment to watch and to see ourselves as the one who Jesus is speaking to.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. Isaiah 43:1

Best Decision

"Jesus wants to help us make the best decision possible." Matthew Kelly

Life is full of decisions.

Every day we make choice after choice.

But are we making the best decisions?

What is the best decision?

"The best thing for us is not what we consider best, but what the Lord wants of us." St. Josephine Bakhita

Jesus should be our first choice to help us with every decision.

Ask Him to help you with the big questions.

Jesus is Love.

Love is the answer.

At the end of my life, I want people to say, "She loved much." John 7:47
