I just finished reading a chapter about the "good thief" from the book, No Greater Love.
The good thief was a revolutionary, someone revolting against Rome, which would explain his condemnation. He was also one of the people mocking Jesus on Good Friday.
But later we find out that the good thief had a change of heart as he hung next to Jesus on the cross.
"Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Luke 23:42
Did you know that the good thief is the only person in the Gospels to address Jesus simply by name?
Jesus is referred to as Son of David, Son of the Most High God, Jesus-Master or sometimes Jesus of Nazareth, but never just "Jesus".
The good thief's heart has truly changed!
"Having rebuked those voices at the Cross (step one) and admitted his sin (step two), the good thief finds a new confidence. He turns to Christ and addresses him personally, intimately, as a friend - "Jesus" - and he humbly places all his trust in Christ's mercy (step three)."
The converted thief asks Jesus to remember him. Yet, Jesus gives him more than what he simply asks!
He forgives him!
"Today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:43
He does not just want to pardon our offenses, like a judge. He wants our hearts, like a lover. He longs for us to be intimately close to him. What he offered the good thief, he offers to us today and everyday if we turn to him - divine intimacy! For he said "You will be with me." No Greater Love
"Life is to be with Christ; for where Christ is, there is the kingdom." St. Ambrose
